Washing Machine Won't Turn On
You press the start button and nothing happens — no lights, no sounds, no water. This is usually an electrical or control issue rather than a mechanical one.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Check the power supply
Make sure the washer is plugged in firmly. Check the circuit breaker — washers should be on a dedicated 120V circuit. Reset the breaker by flipping it fully off, then back on. Try plugging something else into the same outlet to verify it has power.
Check the lid/door lock
Modern washers won't start unless the lid (top-load) or door (front-load) is fully latched and the lock is engaged. Close the door firmly and listen for a click. If the lock mechanism is broken, the washer won't power the wash cycle.
Try a hard reset
Unplug the washer for 60 seconds, then plug it back in. On some models, this resets the control board. For Samsung washers, try pressing and holding the Start button for 5 seconds after plugging back in.
Check the timer or control knob
On mechanical timer models, make sure the knob is pulled out (engaged) and positioned on a valid cycle — not between cycles. On digital models, check for error codes on the display.
Test the outlet with a multimeter
If you have a multimeter, test the outlet for 120V. A GFI outlet may have tripped — look for a red reset button on the outlet itself. Washers in garages or basements often share GFI circuits with other outlets.
When to Call a Professional
If the outlet has power and the door locks properly but the washer still won't start, the control board, timer, or thermal fuse may have failed. These components require professional testing with a multimeter.
