Try these fixes before calling a technician
Check for an unbalanced load
An unbalanced load triggers the washer's safety system and prevents spinning. Open the lid, redistribute the clothes evenly around the drum, and restart the cycle. Heavy items like towels and jeans should be spread out.
Test the lid switch (top-load)
Top-load washers have a lid switch that must be engaged for the spin cycle to activate. Press the switch manually with a pen — you should hear a click. If the switch is broken, the washer won't spin even with the lid closed.
Inspect the drive belt
Unplug the washer and access the drive belt (underneath or at the back). A broken or stretched belt will prevent spinning. If the belt is glazed, cracked, or loose, it needs replacement.
Check the motor coupling (direct drive)
On direct-drive washers (no belt), a failed motor coupling is a common cause. This plastic/rubber connector between the motor and transmission wears out over time, especially with heavy loads.
When to Call a Professional
If rebalancing loads doesn't help and you can't identify a broken belt or switch, the issue may be the clutch assembly, transmission, or motor — all of which require professional repair.
