Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Clean the condenser coils
This is the #1 reason refrigerators run nonstop. Dirty condenser coils can't release heat efficiently, so the compressor works overtime. Pull the fridge out, locate the coils (back or bottom), and vacuum them thoroughly. In homes with pets, do this every 3 months.
Check the door gaskets
Warm air leaking in through damaged or dirty gaskets forces the compressor to run constantly. Clean the gaskets with warm soapy water and inspect for cracks, tears, or sections that have pulled away from the door.
Verify the temperature setting
Settings that are too cold (below 35°F for the fridge or below -5°F for the freezer) will cause the compressor to run excessively. Set the fridge to 37°F and the freezer to 0°F.
Check the condenser fan motor
The condenser fan (near the compressor at the bottom rear) must be running whenever the compressor runs. If the fan has stopped, the compressor overheats and runs continuously trying to compensate. Spin the fan blade — it should turn freely.
Look for frost on the evaporator coils
Remove the back panel inside the freezer. If the evaporator coils are covered in thick frost, the defrost system has failed. The frost insulates the coils and prevents cooling, so the compressor never reaches the target temperature and never cycles off.
When to Call a Professional
If the coils are clean, the gaskets are good, and the fridge still runs nonstop, the compressor may be losing efficiency, the defrost system may have failed, or the thermistor/temperature sensor may be sending incorrect readings. These require professional diagnosis.
