Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Identify the type of noise
Listen carefully: a buzzing/humming usually points to the compressor or condenser fan. Clicking may indicate a relay issue. Rattling often means something is vibrating against the fridge or the drain pan is loose.
Level the refrigerator
Use a level on top of the fridge. Adjust the leveling feet at the bottom until the refrigerator is stable and slightly tilted back (so the doors self-close). An unlevel fridge vibrates and hums louder.
Check the condenser fan
Unplug the fridge and access the condenser fan (usually at the back near the bottom). Spin the fan blade by hand — it should turn freely. Remove any debris caught in the blades.
Inspect the evaporator fan
If the noise comes from inside the freezer, the evaporator fan motor may be wearing out. Ice buildup around the fan can also cause scraping sounds.
When to Call a Professional
Persistent clicking (compressor trying and failing to start), grinding from inside the sealed system, or any noise accompanied by the fridge not cooling properly means it's time for professional service.
