Ice Maker Not Making Ice
Your refrigerator's ice maker has stopped producing ice. This can be caused by water supply issues, temperature problems, or a mechanical failure in the ice maker assembly.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Verify the ice maker is turned on
Check that the ice maker arm is in the down (on) position, or that the electronic switch is set to on. It's easy to accidentally bump the shutoff arm when loading the freezer.
Check the water supply valve
Locate the water shutoff valve behind the refrigerator (usually under the sink or in the basement). Make sure it's fully open. A partially closed valve reduces water flow below what the ice maker needs.
Inspect the water inlet valve filter
The small screen filter inside the water inlet valve can get clogged with sediment. Unplug the fridge, disconnect the water line at the valve, and clean or replace the screen.
Check the freezer temperature
The freezer must be at 0°F (-18°C) or below for the ice maker to function. If it's too warm, ice won't form properly. Adjust the thermostat and wait 24 hours.
When to Call a Professional
If the water supply is fine and the freezer is cold enough but ice still won't form, the ice maker module, water inlet valve solenoid, or control board may need replacement — these require professional diagnosis.
