Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Check the temperature setting
The fridge temperature should be set to 37°F (3°C). On older models with numbered dials, "1" is warmest and "5" or "7" is coldest. Try setting it one notch warmer and wait 24 hours.
Test the temperature with a thermometer
Place a glass of water with a thermometer in the center of the fridge. Check after 24 hours. If it reads below 33°F despite a moderate setting, the temperature control is likely faulty.
Check the air damper
The air damper between the freezer and fridge controls how much cold air enters the fridge section. If it's stuck open, too much cold air floods in. On some models, you can visually inspect the damper — it should open and close, not be frozen in the open position.
Don't store food near the vents
Items placed directly in front of the cold air vents will freeze first. Move sensitive items like lettuce, berries, and beverages to the center or bottom shelves away from the vent openings.
When to Call a Professional
If adjusting the temperature and moving food away from vents doesn't help, the thermostat, thermistor, or electronic control board is likely malfunctioning. A technician can test these components and replace the faulty one.
