Microwave Runs But Doesn't Heat
The microwave turns on, the turntable spins, and the light works — but food stays cold. This usually means the magnetron or related high-voltage components have failed.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Test with a cup of water
Place a microwave-safe cup of water inside and run it on high for 2 minutes. If the water isn't hot, the microwave is definitely not generating heat. This rules out the possibility that food was the issue.
Check the door switches
Microwaves have multiple safety interlocks in the door. If one switch is faulty, the microwave may appear to run (light and fan on) but the magnetron won't activate. Listen for the normal humming sound during operation.
Reset the microwave
Unplug the microwave (or flip the breaker) for 60 seconds, then plug it back in. A power surge can sometimes cause the control board to malfunction temporarily.
When to Call a Professional
WARNING: Microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that can hold a lethal charge even when unplugged. Never attempt to open or repair a microwave yourself. If it's not heating, the magnetron, diode, or capacitor needs professional replacement.
