Ice Maker Making Ice Too Slowly
Your ice maker works but can't keep up with demand. Instead of the normal 8-10 cubes per cycle, you're getting fewer or smaller cubes, and the bin never fills.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Check the freezer temperature
The freezer must be at 0°F (-18°C) for optimal ice production. Every degree warmer adds time to each freeze cycle. Use a thermometer to verify — the built-in display can be inaccurate. Adjust and wait 24 hours.
Check the water supply pressure
Low water pressure means less water per fill cycle, resulting in small or hollow cubes. The ice maker needs at least 20 psi of water pressure. If you recently had plumbing work done or if the supply valve is partially closed, this can be the issue.
Replace the water filter
A clogged water filter restricts flow to the ice maker. Most refrigerator water filters should be replaced every 6 months. If it's been longer, a new filter may dramatically improve ice production speed.
Check for ice clumps in the bin
Ice cubes can fuse together into a solid block (especially if the ice isn't used regularly). This blocks the harvest cycle and makes it seem like ice isn't being made. Break up any clumps and empty the bin periodically if you don't use ice daily.
Inspect the water inlet valve
The water inlet valve opens to fill the ice mold. Over time, mineral buildup can partially clog the valve, reducing water flow. You can hear it buzz when it opens during a fill cycle. If the buzz is weak or absent, the valve may need cleaning or replacement.
When to Call a Professional
If the freezer is cold enough and the water supply is strong but production is still slow, the ice maker module itself may be wearing out, or the water inlet valve may be partially blocked with mineral deposits. A technician can test both and replace the faulty component.
