Garbage Disposal Won't Turn On
You flip the switch and nothing happens — no humming, no noise, no grinding. This is usually an electrical issue or a tripped reset button.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Press the reset button
Look at the bottom of the disposal unit under the sink. There's a small red or black button — this is the overload reset. If the disposal overheated or jammed, this button pops out. Press it firmly until it clicks and try the switch again.
Check the circuit breaker
Disposals are typically on a dedicated 120V circuit or share a circuit with the dishwasher. Check your breaker panel — flip the switch off and back on. Also check if there's a wall switch that controls the disposal outlet.
Test the wall switch
Wall switches for garbage disposals can fail, especially in wet kitchen environments. Try plugging something else into the switched outlet (if accessible). If nothing works on that outlet, the switch may need replacing.
Check for a jam
If the disposal hums but doesn't spin, it's jammed. Turn off the power, then use the hex wrench (Allen key) that came with the disposal to manually turn the flywheel from the bottom. Most disposals have a 1/4-inch hex socket at the bottom center. Work it back and forth to free the jam.
When to Call a Professional
If the reset doesn't pop back in, or if the disposal hums but won't free up with the hex wrench, the motor may have burned out. Disposal replacement is a straightforward job for a technician and usually takes under an hour.
