You press the start button and the dryer does absolutely nothing — no tumbling, no lights, no heat. This is usually an electrical, door switch, or thermal fuse problem.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Check the power supply
Electric dryers need a 240V outlet with a dedicated double breaker. Check both legs of the breaker — flip them fully off, then fully on. For gas dryers, check the 120V outlet and the breaker. Try plugging in a lamp or phone charger to test the outlet.
Test the door switch
The dryer won't start unless the door is fully closed and the door switch is engaged. Open and close the door firmly — you should hear a click from the switch. If the switch is broken, the dryer won't respond to the start button at all.
Check the start switch
The start button or knob itself can fail. If you hear a hum when pressing start but the drum doesn't turn, the motor may be stuck. If there's no sound at all, the start switch may be faulty.
Check for a tripped thermal fuse
The thermal fuse is a safety device that blows if the dryer overheats (usually from a clogged vent). On many models, a blown thermal fuse cuts all power — not just heat. It's a one-time-use fuse that must be replaced. It's usually located on the blower housing or exhaust duct inside the dryer.
When to Call a Professional
If the power supply and door switch are fine, the thermal fuse, start switch, door switch, or drive motor likely need replacement. Always clean the vent before replacing a thermal fuse — otherwise the new one will blow too.
