Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Clean the lint trap thoroughly
Remove the lint screen and wash it with soap and water. Dryer sheet residue builds up an invisible film that blocks airflow even when the screen looks clean. Hold it under water — if water pools on top, the screen needs washing.
Inspect the entire exhaust vent
Disconnect the vent hose from the back of the dryer and the wall. Check for lint buildup inside the hose and at the exterior vent flap. A 25-foot vent run can accumulate pounds of lint over time.
Check for crushed vent hose
The flexible transition vent behind the dryer gets crushed when the dryer is pushed back too far. This single kink can cut airflow by 50% or more. Use a rigid or semi-rigid vent and leave 4+ inches of clearance.
Don't overload the dryer
Clothes need room to tumble. An overloaded dryer can't circulate hot air through the fabric. Fill the drum no more than 3/4 full, and separate heavy items (towels, jeans) from lightweight items.
