Dryer Not Heating

Your dryer runs and tumbles but clothes come out damp and cold. This is the most common dryer complaint and is usually related to the heating element, gas igniter, or thermal fuse.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

Try these fixes before calling a technician

1

Check the lint filter and exhaust vent

A clogged lint filter or blocked exhaust vent restricts airflow, causing the dryer to overheat and trip the thermal fuse. Clean the lint trap before every load. Disconnect the exhaust hose and check for lint buildup — you should feel strong airflow at the outside vent.

2

Verify the correct setting

Make sure you haven't accidentally selected an air-dry or fluff cycle, which tumbles without heat. Select a timed dry on high heat to test.

3

Check the circuit breaker (electric dryers)

Electric dryers use a double breaker (240V). If one leg trips, the motor runs but the heating element doesn't. Check your breaker panel — flip the dryer breaker fully off, then back on. Both legs must be on.

4

Test the gas supply (gas dryers)

For gas dryers, verify the gas shutoff valve behind the dryer is fully open. If other gas appliances in your home are working, the supply is fine and the issue is likely the igniter or gas valve solenoid inside the dryer.

When to Call a Professional

If the vent is clear and power is good, the thermal fuse, heating element (electric), or gas valve solenoids/igniter (gas) likely need replacement. These are the most common parts we replace — the Samsung DC47-00019A heating element alone accounts for many of our dryer repairs.
