Dryer Has a Burning Smell
A burning smell from your dryer is alarming and should be addressed immediately. It could be anything from lint buildup to a failing motor — some causes are fire hazards.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Try these fixes before calling a technician
Stop the dryer immediately
If you smell burning, stop the dryer right away and unplug it. Do not restart it until you've identified the source. A burning smell is never normal and could indicate a fire risk.
Check the lint trap and vent
Lint is extremely flammable. A clogged lint trap or exhaust vent can cause lint to contact the heating element and smolder. Clean the lint screen, pull the dryer out, and inspect the entire vent path. According to the National Fire Protection Association, dryers cause over 15,000 house fires per year — lint buildup is the leading cause.
Look for items stuck in the drum
A small clothing item (sock, underwear) can slip between the drum and the dryer housing and contact the heating element. Rotate the drum by hand and look in the gap between the drum and the front/rear panels.
Check the drive belt
A worn or slipping drive belt can produce a burning rubber smell. If the belt has been slipping against the drum, it glazes over and creates friction heat. Open the dryer cabinet and inspect the belt for shiny, glazed surfaces or cracks.
New dryer? It may be normal (first use only)
Brand-new dryers sometimes produce a slight burning smell during the first 1-2 uses as manufacturing oils and coatings burn off the heating element. This should be mild and go away completely after the first few cycles. If it persists or is strong, it's not normal.
When to Call a Professional
Any persistent burning smell should be professionally inspected. A failing motor, damaged wiring harness, or lint trapped inside the dryer housing are all fire hazards. Do not use the dryer until a technician has cleared it as safe.
